CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE
Listen to me, Max,â the judge continued in a low, secretive voice. âYou murdered my son. I don't care how much you think you've suffered; I've suffered more. I will have my vengeance. You can be sure of that. I've judged you, and I'll punish you. But it won't be a complete loss for you, Max. Your conscience will soon be clear. You'll have paid your debt to me, and everything will be over. Everything.â
The judge slipped a black hood over his masked face, and one of the guards wrenched Max's head up by his hair.
âThe verdict of this court,â the judge droned, âis that the defendant, Maxwell Augustine, is guilty of treason. Let the punishment be read.â
âQuid pro quo! Crush his heart! Crush his heart!â the jury chanted, and the rhythmic cacophony grew deafening in Max's ears. âCrush his heart! Crush his heart! Crush his heart!â
âSo be it!â the judge cried abruptly, ending their chant.
Bailiff! Execute the order of the jury.â
âCome on!â the prosecutor cried. âBe quick about it!â
âWhat are you doing?â Max sputtered.
âBring her closer,â the prosecutor snapped. â
âLeave her alone ... â
The judge grabbed Max's hair from the bailiffâs hand and yanked his head up so close that Max could smell the stench of dark Whisky.
âI want you to suffer,â the judge growled. âI feel hollow. Our children feel hollow. We crave your pain. Only your agony can fill us up and make us whole again!
The judge stepped aside as he released Max and let his head drop down against his chest.
âGet his head up,â he barked. âMake him look at her. Look at her, Max! Look at Sam suffer. She's almost dead. Look at her! She wants to die, doesn't she? Look at her eyes. She's pleading with you to let her die. Do you see that? Look at her!â
âOh...my Lord!â Max pleaded at the sight of her.
âYou see it, don't you? She wants to die.â
âLet her go! Oh God, let her go!â
âThat's for you to do, Max. You let her go yourself. Let her die and end her suffering. We have nothing to do with it. You're the killer. You do it. You kill her.â
Max couldn't believe what he was hearing. âNever,â he gasped.
âThe sooner, the better, Max. You'll see.â
One black-hooded figure stood by Sam's side while another approached Max. As Sam's torturer applied the electric prod to her throat and caused her to stiffen with the current, the same hot shock surged through Max. His throat was at the center of the explosion as the juice ripped through his muscles and nearly blew off his fingertips and toes. His eyes snapped open wide, and he saw Sam's eyes pop past her lids, extruded by her supercharged brain. Her tongue stuck out from her twisted mouth, and their tongues arched in the same way, each turgid and stuck to their lips. Her body danced a spastic jitterbug, and he kept a concurrent beat until their bodies slumped, frayed, and oozing liquid pain. Their sweat flowed endlessly.
